It is the seat of the gmina (administrative district) called Gmina Wilków, which acquired its current borders after the administrative reforms of the country in 1973.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=Central Statistical Office (GUS) - TERYT (National Register of Territorial Land Apportionment Journal) )〕 It lies approximately north-west of Namysłów and north of the regional capital Opole. Before 1945 the area was part of Germany (see ''Territorial changes of Poland after World War II'').
